In an apparently outlandish comment, BJP MP Virendra Singh Mast claimed that people are wearing jackets and coats in lieu of traditional kurta and dhoti which suggest that there is no economic decline in the country.

Taking a dig at the critics of India’s economic situaltion during an event in UP’s Ballia the BJP MP said, "There have been discussions in Delhi and the world, about recession. If there was any recession, we would have come here wearing ''kurta'' and ''dhoti'', not coats and jackets. If there was a recession we would not have bought clothes, pants, and pajamas."

Virendra Singh Mast further stated that India is a nation of villages and not just large cities.

"I want to inform you that this is a country of 6.5 lakh villages and not just cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Hedgewar, Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Jayaprakash Narayan had expressed confidence in the villagers and helped the country gain independence,” he said.

The Congress and other opposition parties have been blaming the BJP for ''complete mismanagement'' of the economy.

The opposition has claimed that there is an alarming deterioration in the livelihood of the extensive majority of people because of the complete mismanagement of the economy by the BJP government.

Government data put forward on 13th January displayed that retail inflation had gone up too 7.35 % in December 2019 as compared to 5.54 % in the previous month.
