As heavy rains lashed Bihar the last couple of days, lightning strikes claimed several lives and left many others injured, on 21 June. The death toll following the series of lightning has risen to 46.

Eight others have been injured as a result of the natural phenomenon, and two others have been left critically injured.

The Principal Secretary of the state's Disaster Management department, Vyasji, said the government would provide Rs 4 lakh compensation to the families of each victim.

"We're still getting the details of deaths due to lightening from District Magistrates of other districts too...it will take some time to reach the final toll due to lightening in the state in the last 24 hours," Vyasji was quoted as having said in a report in The Hindu.

According to department officials, the death toll is expected to rise as reports of deaths from other districts are still coming in. The neighbouring state of Jharkhand has also been considerably affected by the onset of severe lightning.
