On the night of 16 August, 13 people died due to alleged consumption of spurious alcohol in Gopalganj in Bihar. After the families of the deceased claimed it to be a hooch tragedy, the police ordered a probe into the incident, say reports.

According to a report in ibtimes, family members claim that the deceased consumed poisonous liquor at Old Chowk at Khajurbani in Gopalganj town.

The deceased have been identified as Parma Mahto, Mantoo Giri, Manoj Sah, and Shashikant.

According to a report in India Today, the victims complained of uneasiness and after a severe bout of vomiting, they were taken to Gopalganj Civil Hospital. They died while receiving treatment.

Gopalganj District Magistrate Rahul Kumar constituted a three-member team and ordered a probe into the incident. However, Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Ravi Ranjan has waved away allegations of spurious liquor consumption.

Nitish Kumar had imposed a blanket ban on the production and consumption of liquor in the whole of Bihar in April this year. Kumar also claimed that the crime rate has gone down following the ban. "Heinous crimes have come down by 15% in last two months," India Today quoted Kumar as saying.
