All nine accused in the 2002 auditor Radhakrishan assault case - including Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi - were acquitted on 29 April.

On 20 September, 2002, Radhakrishnan - the auditor for the Kanchi Mutt - and his wife were attacked by a group of miscreants at his Mandaveli residence.

The auditor was reportedly attacked under the assumption that he was writing letters in the name of 'Somasekhara Ganapadigal' highlighting irregularities in the Kanchi Mutt.

A case was registered by the Foreshore Estate police and 12 persons, including Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati, were cited as accused and charged with criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder. A chargesheet was filed in 2006.

Sankaracharya had earlier denied all charges and had termed all the evidence submitted in the court as being "false".
