Assam NRC row: After jostling overnight detention at Silchar airport, Mamata Banerjee's TMC lawmakers return Kolkata

Days after the Assam NRC final draft list was released, Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress's (TMC) at least 6 MPs and two MLAs were detained by the cops at Silchar Airport in Kumbhirgram, Assam on Thursday over NRC issue. Finally, after spending overnight at the airport, they flew back to Kolkata.

Six Trinamool Congress (TMC) parliamentarians and two party legislators were detained at the airport as a precautionary measure after they had gone to Assam to campaign against the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) list.


As per reportedly, the TMC leaders were asked to provide assurance that they will not make any provocative speeches over National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue. According to a TMC spokesperson, the detained party leaders and were brutally thrashed by Assam Police and they also accused that the police has also them to hand over their mobile phones.

In the video footage, TMC MLA Mahua Moitra is seen being manhandled by the woman constable, who at one point, is seen pleading with her.

On Thursday evening, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had told her lawmakers to stay put at the airport and not go anywhere. "There is a super emergency in Assam. They don't want us to talk to people," Mamata Banerjee said.

Reportedly, Farhad Hakim, Arpita Ghosh, Mahua Moitra, Mamata Bala Thakur and Kakali Ghosh Gastidar were among the 8 detainees. Even the party took to its official Twitter handle and tweeted: “The Assam government under Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonwal is terrified. We will fight till the end for the Maa Mati Manush of Assam.”
