Farewell Kalam: PM Modi to be present at Missile Man's last rites in Rameswaram

The last rites of former President APJ Abdul Kalam will be performed at his place of birth, Rameswaram after 11 AM on 30 July.

His body was flown to Madurai from Delhi on 29 July and then brought to his home town in a helicopter. Rameswaram is located in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.

He died after suffering a cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong on 27 July.

Dr Kalam was born in Rameswaram on 15 October 1931. According to his relatives, he had envisioned a unique university in his hometown Ramanathapuram that would bring out entrepreneurs who would generate jobs.

Since Dr Kalam's body was kept at Rameswaram, people have emerged in number of thousand to pay their last tribute to him.

Many Union ministers and senior politicians from Tamil Nadu had come to pay their homage to the people's President. Former friends and colleagues including former ISRO chief Dr Madhavan Nair also reached paid their respects.

Public was allowed to pay homage till 29 July evening and after that the body was handed over to Dr Kalam's relatives. The last rites will be performed after his body will be taken to a mosque for prayers on 30 July morning.

Union Ministers Manohar Parikkar, Venkaiah Naidu and P Radhakrishnan accompanied the body from Delhi. PM Narendra Modi will also attend Kalam's funeral ceremony.

Leaders of political parties like Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi among others are also expected to be a part of the ceremony.
