2 sailors dead, 14 injured as warship INS Betwa crashes at Mumbai dockyard

Two sailors were killed and 14 others were injured as INS Betwa, a guided missile frigate, tipped over during undocking at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

"There has been an incident in the cruiser grounding dock at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai involving INS Betwa," said Navy spokesperson Captain DK Sharma.

"The incident occurred during undocking evolution wherein it is suspected that dock blocks mechanism failed. Further information is awaited," said Captain Sharma.

In the past four years, the Indian Navy has lost three major combatants at dock. Vindhyagiri in 2012, Sindhurakshak in 2013 and now, Betwa.

Explaining the situation, he said the 3850-tonne ship, with a length of 126 metres, tipped over while it was being undocked. The mast of the ship hit the dockyard ground, he said.
