As a result of the Census data, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has appealed to the Muslim community to undergo an internal reform to control their population growth and follow family planning. The VHP passed a resolution in this regard after their meeting in Nasik.

According to the data, the community's population has seen a growth rate of 24.6 per cent between 2001 and 2011, the only community that has registered a growth in terms of their share in the total population.

What all did the VHP say?

  • According to The Indian Express, Rajendra Singh, central secretary of the VHP has explained that Muslims should restrain themselves marrying several times and producing more children in the interest of the nation.
  • The VHP leaders said, "A major section of the Muslim community has taken population growth as a mission and some hardliners too are misguiding innocent Muslims to increase their population by showing them dreams of Darul Islam."
  • According to the VHP, Indian Muslims should practice family planning, just the way various Arab countries are. They claim that infiltration from Bangladesh and Myanmar is a factor in the rise of the Muslim populace.
  • The VHP members also expressed concern over the decline in the number of Hindus, as for the first time, the percentage has gone below 80 per cent. They feel such a trend could be a threat to the secular and harmonious identity of the nation and added that that communal harmony has been disturbed in areas where Muslims are in a majority.
  • The VHP has also passed a resolution on "social harmony" and has decided to conduct 'padyatras' (walking tour) in areas with a large number of those from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. They also plan to hold religious discourses to foster feelings of equality.
