A group of Muslims in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh have reportedly pooled in money to pay off Rs 5000 to secure the release of some Hindu prisoners.

According to an IBN report, the prisoners were serving long sentences over petty crimes like ticketless travel. Their failure to pay the fine had resulted in an extension of their sentences.

The members of the Muslim group also made arrangements for some of the prisoners to go back to their villages.

According to media reports, the prisoners were identified as Kishan Sagar, Paappu, Ajay Kumar and Tilak.

The Muslim group was led by a man named Qureshi who said he decided to collect funds to help the prisoners after he was moved by their plight.

He said that their group did not believe that compassion should be restricted to any one community.
