The island country Papua New Guinea has banned Facebook for a month. This is done to identify fake profiles and stop pornography on the social media platform.

Papua New Guinea's communications minister, Sam Basil, said, "Facebook would be banned there for four weeks, providing an opportunity to identify fake profiles and work out how to prevent the spread of pornography on the platform."

Basil also said that it was high time to collect and identify users who hide behind fake accounts and upload pornographic images. Basil also added, "The work will form part of the enforcement of the country's Cyber Crime Act, passed in 2016."

Currently, Facebook is trying to fight against the spread of fake news.  A Facebook spokeswoman said, "We have reached out to the Papua New Guinea government to understand their concerns."
