A 26-year-old Chinese graduation student Renee Ren has over the night turned social media sensation. She has sued her country police for not filing her rape report. It was after she shared her story on social media, it immediately went viral.

She said that her legal action was inspired by photos of women's marches around the world. She quoted, "I thought, those women are so brave."

This is the first case in China where a rape survivor has come out in public and sued police for not taking necessary action on an assault report.

Although last week her case was rejected by the court on a technicality basis. According to the court she is not entitled to bring a criminal prosecution.

On Friday Ren once again filed an appeal stating that her suit should be considered civil suit and not criminal suit, which court previously did. She said, "I am not wanting compensation, but want the court to discipline officials."

This was a significant victory in a country where a member of the public has limited avenues to challenge authorities.
