A group of BJP workers, led by former MLA Yendala Lakshminarayana, took out a motorbike rally on Wednesday as part of their nationwide Tirang Yatra.

Speaking on the occasion, Lakshminarayana said the yatra would cover all constituencies and mandals of Telangana by 17 September, which he called "Telangana Liberation Day".

Demanding that 17 September be declared as "Telangana Independence Day", the BJP leader wanted to know what objection the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government had in doing so. He said the day has been celebrated in the former Nizam-ruled areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka ever since they were merged with India.

While he was agitating for Telangana statehood, K Chandrasekhar Rao, TRS supremo and now chief minister, had promised to declare 17 September as Telangana Liberation Day and celebrate it officially. But, Lakshminarayana said, this promise was conveniently forgotten after KCR come to power.
