UP Shelter Home: 57 girls test positive for COVID-19, 2 minors pregnant, 1 HIV positive

In an appalling case came to light in a government shelter home in Uttar Pradesh’ Kanpur where 57 women and minor girls have tested positive for Coronavirus. The matter of concern is that among those tested girls, five are pregnant, including two minor girls.

According to the reports in India Today, the two pregnant minors include an HIV positive girl.

Meanwhile, the girls are being treated in different hospitals in the district.


While speaking to media, Kanpur DM Brahmdev Tiwari said, “57 girls have tested positive for coronavirus, which includes five girls found to be pregnant. This includes two minors and one HIV positive patient.”

He also told that the girls have been sent by the Child Welfare Committees from Agra, Firozabad, Kanpur, Etah, Kannauj, and were pregnant before they came to the shelter home.

These are the cases under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences [POCSO]Act. He also added that the two other girls who were tested COVID-19 negative are also pregnant.

They were also sent by the CWC team of Kanpur.

Earlier, a woman in the government home had also tested positive for COVID-19, following which a few more tests were conducted.

On June 18, the test results found 33 more girls positive for the virus. Twenty-eight more girls in the shelter home tested positive over the next two days.

Meanwhile, an investigation will be carried out if any officer or employee is found to be involved in the case, Kanpur Commissioner Sudhir Mahadev said.

On the other hand, opposition leader and Congress General-Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has launched an attack on the Yogi Adityanath government on the matter.
