The wife of a 24-year-old Dalit Christian, who was murdered allegedly by her father, was asked to abort pregnancy and wait for things to settle down by her father himself. It is said that her father hired a contract killer for Rs 10 lakh to murder her husband.

20-year-old Amrutha Varshini, whose husband Perumalla Pranay Kumar was killed, was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying “But we never expected that he had evil plans and would get my husband killed so brutally”.

On Spetember, Kumar was killed with a machete when they were coming out of a hospital in Miryalguda town of Telangana. Tirunagari Maruthi Rao, Varshini’s father, was against the marriage of her daughter with a Dalit. Rao is a rich upper-caste Vysya realtor.

The police detained Rao, his brother Shravan and friend Abdul Karim, who is the head of local Congress unit, for questioning on Monday. A police officer said “We have obtained some credible leads in the killing of Pranay and we are hopeful of cracking the case by Tuesday”.

The officer further said “We are suspecting that eight to 10 people were involved in the murder, directly or indirectly”.

Perumalla Balaswamy, Kumar’s father, who is a life Insurance Corporation of India employee said “She was in a state of shock after the incident and got admitted to the same hospital. We asked her whether she would go to her parents’ house… But she was firm that she would stay back with us and would never go to her father, who got my son killed”.

Balaswamy further said “She is now our daughter and not daughter-in-law. She even tied rakhi to my younger son, Ajay, who is studying medicine in Ukraine. We will take care of her for the rest of her life. We shall prove to the world that caste would have to face defeat at the hands of humanity”
