The Supreme Court has agreed on Wednesday to re-examine the quantum of punishment for the Navjot Singh Sidhu today in the 1998 road rage case. Earlier, the apex court has let off the cricketer-turned-politician only with a fine of a meagre Rs 1,000.

The petition has been filed by the son of the deceased in the incident in the SC. Therefore, SC will review the case and also has issued a notice to the Punjab Congress MLA for the hearing.

"Permission to file the Review Petition is granted. Delay condoned. Issue notice restricted to a quantum of sentence qua respondent no. 1 – Navjot Singh Sidhu," stated a bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice Sanjay K Kaul.

Earlier, the verdict was out on 15th May, which stated that Sidhu could not be held responsible for causing the death of one Gurnam Singh, who died in 1998 road rage, said a bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Kaul.

A two-judge bench of the top court, headed by Justice Jasti Chelameswar, and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, in its judgment, also slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 on Sidhu. The court, also acquitted Sidhu's associate, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, in the case.

However, the case has gone first through Session Court, then High Court and Supreme Court.

Earlier on 22nd September 1999, the Session Court judge had acquitted Sidhu and his associate due to the lack of evidence in the case and also giving the benefit of the doubt.

Later, the decision was challenged by the victim’s family before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had in 2006, convicted and sentenced Sidhu to three years imprisonment. Later, Sidhu has challenged the decision before the apex court.

On 27th December 1988, Punjab Congress MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu allegedly beaten Gurnam Singh on his head which caused his death.

However, the question raises here that will Navjot Sidhu get the jail term today or not?
