Republic Day 2020: Kerala mosques hoist national flag, adorn premises with saffron, white and green festoons

Just about all the mosques in the state of Kerala hoisted the national flag and adorned their premises with saffron, white and green festoons on India’s 71st Republic day on Sunday.

Earlier, the state Wakf Board had stated that all mosques in Kerala would haul up the tricolour and read out the preamble of the Indian Constitution on Republic Day in order to “promote national integration”. Several Muslim institutions had also encouraged believers to commemorate the Republic Day to send out message to all parts of the nation.

It had dispached notice to all mahal committees and others to unfurl the tricolour and take an oath to stand guard on country’s constitution. A copy of the preamble of the constitution was also forwarded along with the notice to the mosques.

The turn of events comes in the middle of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in many parts of the nation including Kerala which has been the protagonist in the movement in opposition to the CAA.

Earlier, the Kerala assembly became the first state to pass a resolution in opposed to the CAA. It also became the first state to move a suit in the Supreme Court against the CAA.
