Five blasts rock Assam on Republic Day, no causality reported

Five blasts rock Assam on Republic Day (ANI)

At least five explosions took place in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Charaideo districts on Sunday morning as the country celebrated Republic Day, according to ANI.

As per the reports, the first blast took place at a shop in Graham Bazaar near the National Highway NH 37 and the second blast took place near a Gurudwara in Dibrugarh while another blast took place under Duliajan police limits in Dibrugarh.


The other two explosions took place In Doom Dooma town of Tinsukia district and in Sonari town of Charaideo district. In Dibrugarh, Police and other officers have reached the spot.

"We have received the information about the explosion in Dibrugarh," Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant said.

"An investigation has begun, it is being probed that who is involved in this," the DGP added.

CCTV footages available at Duliajan Tiniali showed two motorcycle-borne youths lobbed a grenade and sped away, the ASP explained.

The blasts at Graham Bazar and AT Road were carried out with time-induced Improvised Explosive Devices, he stated.

Senior police officers have rushed to the site of the explosions and a probe has been initiated, Barua added.

 

On the other hand, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called the incident as a 'cowardly attempt to create terror on a sacred day'.

Taking to Twitter the CM said: "Strongly condemn the bomb blasts in a few places of Assam. This cowardly attempt to create terror on a sacred day only exhibits the frustration of the terror groups after their total rejection by the people. Our Govt will take the sternest action to bring the culprits to book."

Worth mentioning here that, the banned insurgent outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) had called for a 'general strike' on Sunday, asking citizens not to participate in the Republic Day celebrations.
