The Cannes Film Festival will start on May 8, 2018 and will end on May 19, 2018. Recently, the director of the festival, Thierry Fremaux banned the selfies on the red carpet and called them "ridiculous and grotesque".

In an interview with Le Film Francais, the director explained the reason behind the ban: "On the red carpet, the trivial aspect and the slowing down provoked by the disorder which these selfies create tarnishes the quality of [the red carpet experience] and of the festival as a whole."

In 2015 too, the director tried to ban the selfies at the red carpet. He said, “We are waging a campaign to slow down the contemporary practice of selfies on the red carpet and the steps. Beyond what we think, it’s a practice that’s often extremely ridiculous and grotesque.”

Accoring to The Hollywood Reporter, the director said, "We don't want to prohibit it, but we want to slow down the process of selfies on the steps."

He also said, You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie."

The director is also planning to bring an end to morning press screenings. As per the news rules, critics and journalists will see films in the Debussy theatre at the same time that guests inside the main auditorium watch the world premieres.
