Hindu College's new girls hostel has prison-like rules, and is super expensive

Delhi University college hostel rules have never been glorified for being progressive. But when a top DU college like Hindu, which has a fairly relaxed hostel environment for men, doesn't extend the same courtesy to women, it seems to be a stinky case of double standards.

When the shiny new hostel for women was launched, outstation female students breathed a sigh of relief. But that was short lived.

The rules in question, that have been termed "regressive and ridiculous" by the students, include clauses like, "no guests allowed, including girl students" and that women are expected to dress according to the "normal norms of the society". Whatever that means.

As if these jail-level rules weren't enough, the hostel fee for DU standards is akin to living in a five star. The students are expected to cough up a whopping Rs 82,000 annually, a bomb, especially when compared to the sum their male counterparts have to pay -- Rs 47,000.

"Rules have to be made to bind things together," Dr Anju Srivastava, officiating principal of Hindu College told The Indian Express. "A lot of money has gone into setting up this hostel and it is going to be one-of-a-kind. The management considered it necessary to make strict rules," she added.

Strict rules are one thing, telling a woman what to wear, where to go, whom to meet, and when to return, is another. The hostel rules allow the warden random checks without any respect for the privacy of an adult.

Pinjra Tod, a group that challenges absurd hostel rules, has made a strong Facebook post on the issue.
