Shillong Lajong came from a goal down to register a 2-1 win over Guwahati FC in their opening game of the U18 I-League North East zone at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Saturday, 31 October.

Playing at home against a Guwahati FC team that was making its debut in the tournament, Lajong were in for a rude shock when the visitors took an early lead in the game courtesy of Abhijit Tumung.

Putting up an impressive performance against their much-fancied opponents, Guwahati managed to shut out the Lajong attack in the first half, and headed into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The hosts, however, rallied back in the second half, and equalised through defender Mebankhraw Wahlang in the 54th minute. The goal came from a Lajong freekick, which was headed in by skipper Wahlang.

The home team dominated the game after the equaliser, and in the 87th minute, their perseverance paid off as Lalthanmawia scored from close range to give Lajong a 2-1 lead.

The Shillong outfit held on for the remaining minutes to ensure three points from the game. They will next face local rivals Royal Wahingdoh at the same venue on Thursday, 5 November.
