Portuguese football club FC Porto have joined fellow European clubs like Bayern Munich and Celtic in supporting relief efforts for the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. The two-time European champions wrote to UEFA on Friday, 4 September, pledging an euro each from its tickets for the UEFA Champions League game against Chelsea on 29 September.
The club, through its letter to UEFA, called on the other 31 clubs in the competition to follow suit and donate to the cause. Stating it is 'impossible' to turn a blind eye to the crisis, Porto president Jorge Costa said that the current situation required a 'strong movement' from the society, and that football and footballing institutions needed to be involved in such a movement.
