Defending La Liga champions FC Barcelona were handed a major boost on Sunday, 26 September, when it was revealed that Argentine forward Lionel Messi would recover from his recent knee injury earlier than expected.

Messi, who was suspected to have suffered a ligament tear above the meniscus during the club's 2-1 league win over Las Palmas on Saturday, 25 September, started his recovery process the next day after his injury at the club's training facility in Ciutat Esportiva de Sant Joan Despi.

However, much to the relief of Messi and Barcelona, it has been determined by doctors that the player actually suffered a partial rupture, and will return to the playing field faster than expected. The four-time Ballon d'Or winner is now expected to return in seven weeks' time at the latest.

The latest development means that Lionel Messi will be back for the first El Clasico of the season against Real Madrid on 21 November.
