East Bengal head coach Biswajit Bhattacharya on Monday, 11 April, submitted his resignation as the club's head coach, one day after a 3-1 defeat to Bengaluru FC put paid to the Red-and-Golds' title aspirations.

East Bengal, who had lifted the Calcutta Football League (CFL) late last year under Bhattacharya, had come close to ending their I-League drought this season. However, in the must-win encounter against Bengaluru FC at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, they succumbed to a 3-1 loss.

Do-Dong Hyun had given the Kolkata side the lead in the 28th minute, but Bengaluru equalised almost immediately through Eugeneseon Lyngdoh.

In the second half, Kim Song Yong and youngster Malsawmzuala scored for the hosts to seal East Bengal and Bhattacharya's fate.

With the loss, East Bengal remained on 24 points from 14 games, while Bengaluru climbed to the top spot with 29 points from 14 games.
