Cameroonian midfielder Patrick Ekeng passed away on Friday, 6 May, hours after collapsing on the field while playing for his club Dinamo Bucharest against Viitorul in the Romanian Liga 1.

Twenty six-year-old Ekeng, who had entered the field as a second half substitute, collapsed on the pitch without any contact with another player, in the 70th minute with his team leading 3-2.

Ekeng was rushed to a local hospital immediately but was declared dead after attempted resuscitation.

The midfielder had signed for Dinamo earlier this year during the winter transfer window and had scored the last goal in Dinamo's 2-2 away draw in the 2nd leg of the Romanian Cup semi-final game, which sealed their place in the final on away goals rule.

Patrick Ekeng had spent four seasons at French club Le Mans and had turned out for six different clubs during his short career. He had played for the Cameroon national team on two occasions.
