Copa America 2016: Argentina edge out Chile in Santa Clara clash

News Agencies | Updated on: 10 February 2017, 1:49 IST

Angel di Maria stepped up in the absence of talisman Lionel Messi as Argentina opened their Copa America campaign on a winning note, beating defending champions Chile 2-1 in Santa Clara on Monday, 6 June.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger produced a fantastic performance as he put Argentina ahead in the 51st minute before providing an assist to Ever Banega, who doubled his side's lead five minutes later.

Although Chile tried to stage a late comeback when Jose Pedro Fuenzalida scored a consolation goal just before the final whistle, Argentina, who were clearly superior with their high-press and quick counter, managed to hold on to their lead.

With the win, top-ranked Argentina secured a crucial three points and will next face joint-leaders Panama in Chicago.
