Community Shield: Old foes Arsenal and Chelsea face-off at Wembley

Speed News Desk | Updated on: 13 February 2017, 3:28 IST

The traditional curtain raiser to the English football season will pit Premier League champions Chelsea against FA Cup winners Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, 2 August. Arsenal come into the game on the back of an impressive run of form, having won all their pre-season games, while Chelsea have failed to win any of theirs. The match will be the 14th meeting between Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

Team news

Petr Cech is expected to face his former employers Chelsea for the first time since moving to Arsenal. He moved from Chelsea on a four-year contract, earlier in the summer. On the other hand, the Gunners will miss the services of attacking duo Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck. The former is on an extended break after winning the Copa America with Chile, while Welbeck is down with a knee problem. All other senior players from Arsenal are fit and available for the game.

For Chelsea, Diego Costa and Gary Cahill have both been cleared to play after suffering minor injuries during a pre-season game against Barcelona. Colombian striker Radamel Falcao is also expected to feature in the game, having recently signed for the Blues on loan from Monaco. Falcao had a forgettable season with Manchester United last term, scoring just four goals in his season-long loan stay at the club, and will be hoping to prove the doubters wrong this season with Chelsea.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal

Arsenal have gelled well during their pre-season games this season, and have won the Barclays Asia Trophy and the Emirates Cup in the summer. However, in the Community Shield on Sunday, it will be anything but easy against Chelsea, a team they haven't beaten since October, 2011. Mourinho's record against Arsenal (P 13, W 7, D 6, L 0) speaks for itself, and despite Chelsea's erratic pre-season form, it is hard to not foresee them once again prevailing over their London rivals.

Kick off: 7.30 pm, live on Sony Kix and Sony Six HD.
