7 things you should know about UPSC 2015 topper Tina Dabi

As UPSC 2015 results were declared on Tuesday evening, news that Delhi-based Tina Dabi topped the exam went viral.

A total of 1,078 candidates have been selected after the UPSC results - 499 in general category, 314 belonging to other backward classes, 176 from scheduled castes, and 89 from scheduled tribes. These selected candidates will now be recommended for appointment to various central government services, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said.

Here are seven things you should know about Tina Dabi:

1. The 22-year-old topped the UPSC exam in her very first attempt. She took coaching classes for about a year, studying 8-10 hours a day, focused on her schedule and weekly targets.

2. Dabi was sleeping when news that she topped the exam started flashing. "I was sleeping when the results came. I knew they would be out today but there's usually no particular time. When my phone started buzzing repeatedly, I realised the results had been announced. Since then we have been so busy that I still haven't had time to actually register what has happened," The Indian Express quoted her as saying.

3. Dabi wants to work with the Haryana cadre.

But why? "We all know the sex ratio of girl and boy child is quite less and that is why I would like to contribute my efforts for the empowerment of women there," she said, as quoted by PTI.

4. Both her parents are both Indian Engineering Service (IES) officers - her mother took voluntary retirement while her father is still in service. She credits most of her success to her mother.

5. She is a political science graduatete from the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi.

6. According to her parents, Dabi has always been a good student, excelling academically.

7. Dabi is a voracious reader, a "big Jane Austen fan", and a painter of Madhubani art.

8. Dabi, is probably the first Dalit to top the UPSC exams. Northwest Delhi MP and Dalit leader Udit Raj tweeted, "Napoleon said that without opportunity ability can't be cultivated"
