An ATM cash van driver pulled off what is being called one of the biggest heists in the national capital on Thursday evening. But his golden run was cut short by the police after they arrested him in the Okhla industrial area.

How did he execute the heist?

For starters, it seems that the driver had no great plan. The crime is being talked about for the amount of money involved and for the sheer audacity with which he executed a crime that was bound to fail.

Who is the driver?

The police has identified him as Pradeep Shukla, a 35-year-old who reportedly joined the cash replenishment and private security company, SIS, two months ago.

Shukla was unhappy with his employees, his salary and his working hours.

Here's the story of the heist.

At around 2 pm, a cash van left Vikaspuri Axis bank branch with Rs 22.5 crore. An SIS security driver accompanied the driver.

At about 2:30 pm, the duo were crossing Sriniwaspuri when Patel asked Shukla to stop the van as he wanted to urinate.

The driver used the time to flee the spot.

The guard first rushed to another branch of the office in Okhla to report the incident.

The branch tracked the location of the van through GPS and found that it was at Govindpuri Metro station.

Meanwhile, Shukla hid the cash in a warehouse in Okhla. He then took the van to Govindpuri metro station and abandoned it there.

After the deed, he came back to the warehouseto sleep.

How did the police nab him?

  • A massive hunt was launched given the amount of money Shukla had fled with.
  • Scores of pickets and police checkpoints were set up across the city.
  • Checking of vehicles was intensified at the borders.
  • The police successfully tracked him down to the godown from where he was arrested by the police.
  • The police said there were lapses on the part of the private security firm employed by the bank.

  • According to Delhi Police guidelines, a cash van can carry a maximum amount of Rs 5 crore at a time. But this cash van was carrying over four times that amount.

What did he do with the money?

He bought clothes worth Rs 11,000. The remaining amount has been recovered.

What are the charges against him?

Pradeep has been brought to the Okhla Police station. Police say it is not a simple case of theft but a criminal breach of trust.
