The Supreme Court today allowed large diesel vehicles, mainly cars above 2000 cc engine to stay on the national capital roads. However, the Apex Court has asked car owners to pay 1% of the total cost of car as a green fine, to ply their diesel cars on Delhi roads.

In 2015, in a bid to curb pollution, the Apex Court had temporarily banned the sale of large diesel cars in New Delhi, triggering strong appeals from manufacturers.

After listening to the appeals, the court today decided that it would levy an additional 1% tax on the retail price of the diesel car.

Last month, the top environmental court ordered authorities to stop all diesel vehicles at least 10 years old from being driven in Delhi.
