In a surprising move, the South African government on 25 April, banned cricket and national rugby federations from bidding or hosting international tournaments for at least a year.
According to reports, the decision came after the country's sports minister Fikile Mbalula felt that the cricket and rugby authorities failed to create opportunities for black players.
The minister made the announcement after receiving a report on the "transformation" in South Africa's five biggest sports: rugby, cricket, soccer, athletics, and netball.
The athletics and netball federations also were banned from making bids. Soccer was the only one to meet its target.
The South African government has been pushing for years for the country's main sports - especially rugby and cricket - to create more opportunities for black players.
