ICC World Cup 2019

The unpredictable English weather has impacted more than one match in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. four out of 45 league matches were abandoned due to rain, the most in a single edition of the World Cup.

So what will happens if knockout matches are washed out? how will the winner be decided in case of no results?

Reserve Day For All Knockout Games:

The ICC has done it job to make sure the winner is decided on the field. As per the tournament rules, there is a reserve day for all three knock out matches, which is the day after the scheduled match day (July 10th for the first semi final, July 12th for the second semi final and July 15th for the final).

Reserve Day Match Rule:

If the two semi finals and the finals don’t finish on the Scheduled day, the match will start from the same position on the following day. So it will be a continuation, not a restart. If no play is possible on the scheduled day, then a full fifty overs match will be played on the following day, if the weather permits.

If it rains the following day also, the match will be reduced 20 overs a side or the match time will be extended by upto 2 hours.

For Fully Washed Out Game:

What happens if there is no play possible to decide the winner?

In that case, the team that finished higher on the points table after the league stages will see themselves to the finals. For instance, if the India and New Zealand semi final cannot decide the winner because of the rain, India will go through to the finals as they topped the league table and New Zealand were fourth.

Rain Rule For The Final:

In the final, if there is no play possible on the scheduled day as well as the reserve day, then the cup will be shared between the two finalists.

Tie Breaker Rules:

In case of a tie during the semi finals and the final, the winner will be decided by a super over.
