David Warner blasts double hundred to quell Kiwis in Perth Test

David Warner reached his 4000-run mark by scoring a maiden double hundred on Friday as Australia maintained a complete stranglehold over New Zealand on the opening day of the second Test at Perth.

The 29-year-old pugnacious opener also scored his third consecutive century and remained unbeaten on 244 as the hosts made 416 for two before the stumps were drawn.

Opting to bat first, Australia saw a 101-run opening partnership between Joe Burns (40) and Warner before the latter constructed a mammoth 302-run stand for the second wicket with Usman Khawaja (121).

New Zealand pace spearhead Trent Boult continued to struggle with his form as he failed to swing the ball and gave away 99 runs in his 17 overs.

Australia are leading the three-match series 1-0 after crushing New Zealand by 208 runs at the Gabba in the first Test.
