We are proud of our Navy and the way they are rescuing Chennai flood victims, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his greetings to the Indian Navy as the nation celebrates 44th Navy day today.

Indeed, as stated by the Prime Minister, the Navy has always risen to the occasion to protect our nation. Its ongoing rescue operation in flood ravaged Chennai proves that point.

Here's how the Indian Navy provided relief to stranded people

  • On 2 December, one team comprising 20 sailors (five divers and 15 good swimmers) with Gemini and associated gears were deployed to Gandhi Nagar near Adyar bridge. The team rescued 15 stranded people.

  • Team two comprising one officer and 16 sailors (four divers and 12 good swimmers) two Geminis and 250 food packets were deputed on 2 December to RDO office, Tambaram.

  • In addition to INS Airavat that reached Chennai on 3 December, the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) of the Indian Navy dispatched two more fully equipped ships - INS Sahyadri and INS Shakti, to participate in the rescue and relief operations in the rain-hit areas of Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.

  • INS Shakti along with INS Sahyadri are loaded with a helicopter, 20 pallets (sets) each comprising food, clothing and medicine for 100 personnel, 30 tonnes of food along with 10 field kitchens and one tonne ready-to-eat meals, 200 tents, 1,000 blankets, bedsheets, eight generators, 5,000 litres of bottled drinking water in addition to 700 tonnes of fresh water available on the ships, 3,000 litres of packaged milk and 2,000 kg of milk powder among others.
