After inconsistencies in data were identified by Nissan Motor Co., an internal probe conducted by Mitsubishi Motors Corp. revealed that the fuel mileage test data had been falsified and tampered with, by Mitsubishi employees.

On 20 April, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. issued a statement declaring that internal probe has unearthed evidence indicating that the fuel mileage test data for several models of vehicles has been falsified.

Along with 157,000 of Mitsubishi's own-brand light passengers cars, 468,000 vehicles produced for Nissan Motor Co. have been impacted by the inaccurate tests.

After German carmaker Volkswagen, Japanese auto company Mitsubishi has once again been struck with an auto-defects scandal. In the early 2000s, they were faced with problems such as failing brakes, faulty clutches and fuel tanks, and it had taken a substantial amount of time to revamp their image.
