All talk: When Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar & Hrithik Roshan failed to deliver

Bollywood films tend to have prolonged promotions strategies - sometimes going up to months before the release. However, if there's anything that the film industry has taught us, it is that no amount of promotions can help save a film that has no quality content example, Dilwale, Bang Bang and Veer.

With April Fools' Days just having passed us by, we thought this would be a good time to talk about the times that Bollywood superstars promised us cinematic marvels and got our hopes up with extensive marketing campaigns and innovative promotional tactics, but failed to deliver. Take a look:

Shah Rukh Khan

Despite being a part of memorable films like Chak De India, Swades, My Name Is Khan to name a few, the actor seems to be going overboard in terms of marketing his films of late.

Dilwale, the December 2015 dud, is testament to this fact. Despite the almost-exhausting promotional events and activities that the team engaged in, the film failed to impress.

Another such film was Ra.One - Shah Rukh Khan's attempt to join the superhero bandwagon. King Khan had gone all out to promote the film, which he claimed would have impressive and innovative visual effects. Sadly, while Ra.One's visual effects did impress, that was the only plus point in an otherwise painful superhero film. Not even the seven-month long promotional campaign could save the flak this superhero flick received from viewers and critics alike.

Salman Khan

Over the years, Salman Khan films have attained a critic-proof status. Despite most of his films garnering negative critic reviews, they go on to shatter Box Office records. However, Salman Khan too has had his share of flops. Salman Khan opened his account this decade with Veer. The film was promoted as 'The Most Entertaining Period Film of Bollywood'. And it ended up being anything but.

Another film which failed to spring the magic at Box Office was Salman's take on social issues, Jai Ho. The social drama managed to rake in the numbers at the mass-dominated circuits. However, while the critics slammed it, the multiplex audiences too rejected the film for its outdated concept and treatment.

Hrithik Roshan

If Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan have something in common, it is their one-film-at-a-time work ethic. However, while the former tends to sign unconventional and interesting films, the same cannot be said about Roshan. With his last release, Bang Bang, viewers were promised India's biggest action adventure yet. But all that viewers got in the end, was a poor copy of Tom Cruise's Knight and Day. All that glitters, anyone?

Akshay Kumar

In an industry where actors are defined by the kind of cinema they pick, Akshay Kumar is the rare exception - for he seems to be able to juggle commercial and unconventional cinema with absolute ease. While the actor has signed some great scripts recently, his four-films-a-year target often leads to some Box Office disappointment.

Last year's big ticket release, Brothers, which Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra promoted as an action film interwoven with melodrama, was rejected by viewers, many of whom called it headache-inducing. The action didn't work, and neither did the emotional sequences. Another such film by the Khiladi is Blue. The film, promoted extensively as India's first underwater action film, sank without a trace.
