Varun Karan Kalank

This week, Karan Johar's multi-starrer venture Kalank released and the film was heavily loaded with expectations. The film was made on the huge budget of 150 crores including print and promotions. Even it was told the biggest film of Dharma Productions till now. Following the footsteps of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar broke his all the way and erected a lavishly made set to shoot the film.

When the film was supposed to be made in that high budget, the producers decided to bring the successful leading cast also. They brought their students Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the leading roles, while Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha in the supporting roles. Even they brought Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit to the silver screen after the long gap of 22 years. Now there was all the reason for the audience to go and watch the film in the theaters. Maybe this is what exactly, Karan Johar's team planned.

2 States

The film went in the direction of Abhishek Varman another student of Karan Johar who assisted him in My Name Is Khan. Abhishek Varman made his Bollywood directorial debut with 2 States-One Marriage, starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. The film was made in the collaboration of Dharma Productions and Sajid Nadiadwala's Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and did amazing collection around 100 crores.

2 States is the only film of Arjun Kapoor that collected 100 crores and also Alia Bhatt's first one to enter 100 crore club. Well, that was past history. The thing is like 2 States, this time also Dharma and Nadiadwala collaborated for Kalank, to double the expectations and maybe the box office collection.

SRK Rani Kajol

The film was in the buzz since it was announced and especially for the reason when Karan Johar mentioned about the film in his biography, 'An Unsuitable Boy'. He revealed in the book that the film was supposed to be made after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and it was his father Yash Johar's dream to made this film. Even the film was ready on the papers with having the leading cast of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, and Ajay Devgn.

Well, due to some circumstances the film was not made and after the demise of Yash Johar, Karan also never opened the chapter. Meanwhile, after around 17 years, Karan Johar finally the courage to made Kalank. Now when the film has been released it totally has missed the opportunity. The film has just collected around 54 crores in just four days.

Baahubali 2.0

Karan Johar who was on top notch of the success with his films and especially the two films Baahubali series and 2.0 that he presented in Hindi. Obviously this time the expectations were high but like the destiny, it just failed. The interesting thing is that this is not just going to be Karan Johar's biggest failure ever in Dharma Productions but also the first flop for leading actor Varun Dhawan.

Varun Dhawan who made his debut with Karan Johar's Student Of The Year has not given a single flop at the box office when it comes to collection. Till now, Varun Dhawan had worked in 12 films till now including Kalank. However, Kalank being his 12th outing became his first box office failure and he finally got a breaker in his career with Kalank.

Dilwale

Meanwhile, this is not the first time when a multi-starrer film of Varun Dhawan has failed. Earlier Shah Rukh, Kajol, Kriti Sanon starrer directed by Rohit Shetty also failed but the film actually collected the budget so it never been a flop for the production house. And also the film was on the shoulders of Shah Rukh, so for Varun collection around 150 crores is a successful film. Well, this time Kalank was totally on his own shoulders and he was the main lead of the film, so the success and failure both will be counted in his career.

Brahmastra

Well, moving forward to another chapter, Karan Johar has already announced two other mega-budget films, Brahmastra and Takht. Brahmastra will be a Sci-Fi film having Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Mouni Roy, and others in the leading role. Brahmastra has made under the direction of Ayan Mukerji and the film is slated to release on Christmas 2019.

Takht Karan Johar

While on the other hand, Karan Johar himself will direct a period drama film called Takht, having a huge multistar cast. The film will have Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, Vicky Kaushal, Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and others. This film is going to release in 2020. Now Dharma Productions can only hope that what happens with Kalank won't repeat with Brahmastra and Takht for sure.
