PVR Pictures India has acquired the rights to release Lynne Ramsays psychological drama "You Were Never Really Here" in India.

The film features three-time Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix.

Its released date is not yet fixed, but it might make its way into the theatres in India in December.

"Films like 'You Were Never Really Here' are films that our audiences look forward to and we are only too happy to be the medium to make that happen," said Kamal Gianchandani, PVR Pictures CEO, in a statement.

"PVR Pictures' philosophy has been a strong balance of high-quality content and economics and we are proud to say that this one is right up there for us on that list," he added.

The project has been adapted from the Jonathan Ames novel.

In the film, Phoenix plays a war veteran who devotes himself to saving women being exploited by sex traffickers. Things go very wrong when he tries to save a girl from a brothel in New York. The film won accolades at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
