Mubarakan Movie Review: Too loud to be taken seriously

Mubarakan is yet another cookie cutter comedy film from Anees Bazmee stable, that comes attached with slapstick humour, loud characters, ear splitting background music, silly lines, 'peppy' music and yes, a big fat wedding at the climax.

In Mubarakaan, you get novelty only in the form of a hero with a double role.  Karan and Charan (Arjun Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor) are twins brought up in different homes. Their big punjabi family is overtly emotional, is ready to flare up at a moment's notice and is impossibly dramatic.

The chahca of the family (Anil Kapoor) is a bachelor and he is the one family turns to whenever there is a crisis. He only makes it worse by his 'ingenious' brainwaves.Karan and Charan have their own girlfriends (Illeana D'cruz and Neha Sharma respectively), but are too afraid to talk about this to his boisterous, dramatic family.  The family wants one of the boys to marry a rich man's daughter Binkal (Athiya Shetty).

Mubarakan has some genuinely funny moments, and manages to keep you chuckling through the film. But ear-splitting background music, randomly inserted songs, repetitive gags spoil the fun. Arjun Kapoor is sincere and even manages to make his two characters marginally different, but he still has a long way to go, especially when sharing the screen space with an accomplished actor like his real life chacha, Anil Kapoor. Anil Kapoor, the effortless actor that he is, is in his elements and delivers a fantastic performance. Ratna Pathak Shah and Pavan Malhotra are a delight to watch, even though Pawan is made to more scream than talk through the movie.

Watch this film for Anil Kapoor.
