In figures: Will MS Dhoni: The Untold Story hit the coveted 100 crore mark and emerge a hit?

This Friday will see the release of MS Dhoni: The Untold Story starring Sushant Singh Rajput. While talks about film earning Rs 100 crore have already begun, this is not one of those films which would be a success merely by making an entry into the Rs 100 crore club.

The film directed by Neeraj Pandey has been mounted on a huge budget of Rs 105 crore (inclusive of print and publicity). While a bumper opening is on cards given the pre-release hype, it is essential for the biopic to record a steady trend at the ticket window.

Here's a look at the economics (Revised):

  • Cost of Production: Rs 85 crore
  • Print and Publicity: Rs 20 crore
  • Total: Rs 105 crore

Already recovered:

  • Satellite Rights: Rs 35 crore
  • Music Rights: Rs 8 crore
  • Total: Rs 43 crore

Recovery Pending: Rs 62 crore

If the collections are close to Rs 140 crore, the distributors share would be Rs 70 crore which would result in a break even situation. At Rs 140 crore net collections in India, the revenue from overseas market would result in a surplus thus helping the makers record reasonable profits.

With respect to collections in India, the movie will be (Revised):

  • Flop: Rs 110 crore and below
  • Average: Rs 110 crore - 130 crore
  • Hit: Rs 130 crore to 150 crore
  • Super-Hit: Rs 151 crore - 175 crore
  • Blockbuster: Rs 175 crore and above

The content shall tell us if the film manages to emerge a blockbuster or no!
