Shivaay vs Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Box Office: Ranbir Kapoor defeats Ajay Devgn on opening day

Karan Johar's directorial Ae Dil Hai Mushkil fared better than Ajay Devgn's, Shivaay, at the Box Office on its opening day, 28 October.

Over the last few months, the two films have been constantly making the news for their high-voltage Box Office clash - which was also marred with the raging controversy over Pakistani actors working in Bollywood.

However, despite calls to "boycott" the Karan Johar film - for having cast Fawad Khan - Ae Dil Hai Mushkil recorded an impressive opening day at the Box Office, with crowds picking the romantic drama over Devgn's action thriller.

Crowds flocked to catch the early morning shows of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil at the multiplexes in metros. The pan-India occupancy of the Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan film was around 40% - a commendable feat for the dull, pre-Diwali period.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is targeted at viewers in the metros, which are relatively unaffected by the pre-Diwali lull.

On the other hand, the pre-Diwali period took a toll on Ajay Devgn's Shivaay. The action thriller, which was expected to open well, recorded a pan-India average occupancy of 25 - 30% through out the day. While Shivaay has performed better than ADHM at the single screens, it has failed to reach its true potential due to pre-Diwali lull.

Both shows recorded a drop in occupancy in the afternoon/evening shows on 28 October, what with Friday being a regular working day.

Although a bumper opening was never on cards, Shivaay raked in around Rs 10 crore on its opening day. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil managed to rake in collections of Rs13.5 crore. With these numbers, Karan Johar and team seem to have won the opening day battle of the much-anticipated clash.

Stay tuned to Catch News for more updates on both films.
