Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is likely to be made the ambassador of the state government's "drought-free Maharashtra" Jalyukt Shivar project.
According to sources, the actor will join Maharasthra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for a press conference at 4.30 PM today at the Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai's Malbar Hill. Although the subject of the announcement has not been confirmed, an ANI report says that Aamir will be announced as the new face of the Jalyukt Shivar scheme - which aims at making 25,000 villages in the state drought-free in five years.
The move by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government to get the star on board to partner for one of its flagship schemes, comes less than three months after Aamir's "intolerance" row. In November last year, Aamir courted controversy when he reiterated his wife Kiran Rao's sentiments about the the "rising intolerance" in the country. In the wake of the row that followed, the Tourism Ministry chose not to renew Aamir's contract with the Incredible India campaign
On 13 February, Aamir attended a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Others at the event - held at the Turf Club reportedly to mark the inauguration of Make in India Week - included politicians, diplomats as well as actor Kangana Ranaut.
A day later, the actor attended the cultural event at Make in India Week in Mumbai where a fire broke out at the venue. He had then praised the disaster management skills of the Maharashtra police and fire department and had lauded CM Fadnavis for having stayed back to oversee the evacuation efforts.
