In a bizarre incident, doctors in Omni Hospitals of Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh treated a woman who was already dead and collected Rs 1.1 lakh from her relatives towards the bill.

Following the incident, District Collector Ch. Vijaya Mohan ordered a probe into the allegations. The Collector, along with District Medical and Health Officer U. Raja Subba Rao and Kurnool Revenue Divisional Officer L. Raghu Babu, also visited the hospital and inquired about the incident following the complaint.

The complaint was filed by A. Chennaiah, alleging that his sister Suvarthamma, who was injured in a road accident, was allegedly treated after her death.

An injured Suvarthamma was admitted to the ICU in Omni Hospitals on 16 August, 2015.

The bizarre incident

  • Doctors Balaji Naik, Asif Jafri and Roop Kumar allegedly treated Suvarthamma for three days and shifted her to the general ward stating she was recovering.
  • The brother said that he had noticed changes in Suvarthamma's eyes and limbs on the night of 24 August and informed the nurses, who called a doctor, but she died before the doctor arrived. However, the doctor took the already dead Suvarthamma into the ICU.
  • When he questioned the doctors, they said that his sister died due to a heart ailment.

The investigation

  • The District Collector has directed the DM&HO to take possession of the original case sheets and records pertaining to Suvarthamma's treatment and submit a preliminary report.
  • Superintendent of Police A. Ravikrishna has been ordered to inquire as to why no FIR was filed in the accident case.
  • The district administration will soon launch a drive to verify the facilities and treatment modes in all private hospitals, the Collector added.
