Auto Expo 2016: Volkswagen eyes 'Indian sub four metre compact sedan' market with Ameo

Volkswagen wants a pie of the lucrative 'Indian sub four metre compact sedan' market and showcased its latest offering, the Ameo on Tuesday, just before the Delhi Auto Expo.

The car has been designed and engineered in India and will be manufactured at the Volkswagen plant in Chakan, Maharashtra. The car will also be showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo. This car is likely to have the highest percentage of localisation among all Volkswagen cars sold in India.

The car will come with a 1.2L MPI engine mated to a five speed manual gearbox. A bigger 1.5L TDI engine will also be available, with a five speed manual and a seven speed DSG transmission option. Safety of its occupants is another important feature of the car. It comes with dual front airbags and anti-lock braking system as standard.

The car will be launched in the second half of 2016 and prices shall be unveiled at the launch.

Speaking at the showcase, Jurgen Stackmann, Board Member for sales and Marketing, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said: "India is an important market for Volkswagen and it will become even more important in the future. Today, we present the next big step to you, a car that is specially designed for the Indian Market."

The car will be expected to take on the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Figo Aspire amidst stiff competition in the sub four metre compact segment. The Ameo should also be priced in Rupees five to eight lakh bracket.

In the next fiscal year, Volkswagen is set to launch four new models, Ameo, Polo GTI, Tiguan and Passat.
