Assam Election 2016: Congress attacks Modi; invokes Gujarat riots in latest advertisement

In a move that is unlikely to go down well with the BJP hierarchy, the ruling Congress party has issued full page advertisements in leading dailies of Assam featuring an image from the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The image, that of a pleading Qutubuddin Ansari, which went on to become a symbolic photo of the 2002 riots, appeared on the last day of campaigning on Saturday, 9 April.

With Ansari's image in between, the advertisement questions the 'Modi's Gujarat' model, which the BJP has advertised on quite a few occasions during its campaign trail.

"Does Modi's Gujarat only mean development? Do you want Assam to be like this Gujarat? The decision is yours," the advertisement reads.

The advertisement is being seen as a response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches on Friday, 8 April. While campaigning in parts of central and lower Assam, Modi had attacked the ruling government on the issue of illegal immigration.

Modi accused Congress of aiding and abetting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, and in a particular rally in Nagaon, had said, "Where will the Assamese people find employment when the Bangladeshis have already taken up all their jobs?"

A total of 61 constituencies will go to polls in the second and final round of voting on Monday, 11 April.
