FASTag Fraud: Scamsters manage to get man's UPI PIN, dupe him of Rs 50,000

In a perturbing turn of events, it has been reported that scamsters have now come up with a new method to dupe citizens. Fraudsters are now attempting to draw off money from people’s bank account via UPI (Unified Payments Interface) on the trial of helping them register and get their FASTag up and running.

The initial incident under this scam was reported from Bengaluru where a man was duped of Rs 50,000 when he got a phone call from ‘customer service’ of Axis Bank, who sent him an online form to fill in order to get his FASTag wallet working after the victim registered a complain that the same wasn’t running.

As claimed by the reports, the fraudsters managed to jget the UPI PIN from the man by tricking him about the online registration procedure. “The caller sent me a link through SMS, which said ‘Axis Bank-FASTag form.’ As asked, I provided them with details to get my FASTag wallet activated. In the form, I gave various details, including my UPI PIN. I thought that the application itself was a point of recharge. Therefore, I typed the PIN and submitted it,” the victim was quoted as saying.

“Subsequently, I was told that the helpdesk had generated a one-time password (OTP) that was sent to my phone. I was then asked to send the OTP to another number and I did so,” the victim added.

After the fraud was reported, the authorities have advised people not to disclose the PIN or password to anyone. There is no need to set forth any password or banking specifics. FASTag can be set in motion only by means of, using MyFASTag app or visiting the nearest bank branch. FASTag process does not happen by speaking to a bank employee over the phone.

People have also been urged that in case of any such calls regarding ‘registration’, they should disconnect the call and visit the nearest bank to check if there is any issue.
